Adding clips from other VHS tapes

These clips are from all kinds of VHS tapes i had lying round the house, I took segments of the tapes, cut them out and spliced them together, because i could watch the video and I had opened the top of the VCR I could pick out scenes from the tape and cut out those segments so i knew what footage i was getting. As well as films i also included home videos, just so it added a bit more realism and grounded the footage. I also had some of these where i have created them digitally, then converted to tape added the distortion, then converted them back to digital again.

adding authentic distortion with a tweezer

This film was originally shot with a 100 mm macro lens on a canon 650D, the footage was then edited and recorded to VHS. The Tape was then played with the VCR's top cover taken off, I used tweezers to hold the tape at certain points to produce the glitches you see in the video.

The Film is influenced by Nostalgic memories that I have of the VHS cassette, it highlights the malfunctions and problems that the format is known for today.

Effects added by using a tweezer

I feel this is a much better way of creating distortion than adding it in After Effects, at least this way i'm affecting the actual tape
